Don't just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon:
Isaiah, 42:1-9, Luke 3:2-3, Luke 3:15-16, 21-22
Outline
- Today's gospel account of Jesus' batpism is one of the few places in which all three 'persons' of the Trinity are present.
- Jesus' identity is rooted in the words he hears from His Father: "You are my beloved; with you I am well pleased."
- John the Baptist was also secure in his identity because he was rooted in God's Word.
- While it is tempting to take some of the credit, we must give all of the glory to God.
- Paul and Barnabas give us a great example of what it means to 'deflect' glory when they are mistaken for gods (Acts 14:8-15).
- While we may not make idols like in the Old Testament, we often do elevate people or experiences above God.
- Because of our insecurities, we often become a savior to others. However, it was only Jesus who spoke the words "Come to me." It is not our job to be a people-fixer.
Application
- In what do you find your identity (work, relationships, success, God)?
- In what are the other things (people/conferences/experiences) are you tempted to your faith rather than trusting God?
- Where have you tried to be a savior to someone?
