Bible Study

Don't just take our word for it . . . take His!  We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon:

Isaiah, 42:1-9, Luke 3:2-3, Luke 3:15-16, 21-22

Outline

  1. Today's gospel account of Jesus' batpism is one of the few places in which all three 'persons' of the Trinity are present.
  2. Jesus' identity is rooted in the words he hears from His Father: "You are my beloved; with you I am well pleased."
  3. John the Baptist was also secure in his identity because he was rooted in God's Word.
  4. While it is tempting to take some of the credit, we must give all of the glory to God.
  5. Paul and Barnabas give us a great example of what it means to 'deflect' glory when they are mistaken for gods (Acts 14:8-15).
  6. While we may not make idols like in the Old Testament, we often do elevate people or experiences above God.
  7. Because of our insecurities, we often become a savior to others. However, it was only Jesus who spoke the words "Come to me." It is not our job to be a people-fixer.

Application

  • In what do you find your identity (work, relationships, success, God)?
  • In what are the other things (people/conferences/experiences) are you tempted to your faith rather than trusting God?
  • Where have you tried to be a savior to someone?
  • Follow this link to a for a list of who we are "in Christ". Focus on one or two and remind yourself of those truths throughout the coming week.
