Bible Study
Don't just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon.
Colossians 1.24-2.5
Outline
- From the old sports show the Christian life in reality has ‘the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat’. Paul is proclaiming the “riches of the glory...Christ in you the hope of glory”. He is able to do that even though he is in Rome, under house arrest, chained to a Roman soldier, and awaiting trial before Caesar. Paul counters the false teaching that God’s plan was a mystery that had been kept hidden because it was hidden until Christ came.
- Paul also talks about the reality that as he serves Christ he will also suffer as Christ suffered.
- When Jesus says take up your cross and follow him it is a call to live an unselfish life.
- The Kingdom of God has the ‘now and not yet’ reality to it.
- Those who would be presented mature in Christ must hold those two realities together.
- We have the guarantee of forgiveness from the cross of Christ but in joining in Jesus ministry of the Kingdom of God on earth we have only the partial reality of what God will accomplish through willing servants.
Application
- Is there anything lacking in what Christ accomplished on the cross that would compel Paul to add what was lacking?
- What did Jesus accomplish on His first coming?
- What will Jesus accomplish at His second coming?
- How does the ‘now and not yet’ reality of the kingdom of God influence our life and ministry on the earth?
- What place does faith play in the accomplishment of God’s purposes?
- How much of it relies upon us to accomplish God’s purposes?
